Hi Kev, I heard you and the band at the Craufurd Arms last night. You sounded really great and you all looked liked you were enjoying playing your songs. It was real, intimate and honest. I haven't felt excited about music for ages now and you caught my imagination.
When I got home I listened to the Deep Blue album on Bandcamp. I had an idea that the recording probably wasn't going to be as good as you sounded last night. How about recording a live session sometime? Best wishes, geoff

Thanks Steve. The thing is… the advance is money they have lent to the bands to record/promote et cetera. Is the profit from the household names really covering the deficits from the bands who are still in debt? Does this link tweeted by @AtmosTrio answer that question? – http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2010/apr/02/music-industry-bank-loans

I read that as Universal wanting to take out a loan to provide a loan. They want to send The Rifles overseas with absolutely no guarantee that they’ll go down well and break even with sales. They keep the majority of their roster in debt and want to top-up the debt with money they don’t have? Of course, it’s file-sharing that’s making them go broke and not their fantasy land business practice…

Good thoughts, Kev. Well put.

The stat re: Bon Jovi was that at the point when Polygram became part of Universal only 5 or 6 of the bands on their entire roster had recouped their advance. All of them massive household names. Everyone else on the label was in debt, and the label was happy to keep it like that, as they don't need to pay artist royalties to people who haven't recouped...
